Finding Joy in Baby Gratitudes

As you might know, I’m a big proponent of small steps—even micro ones—that keep us moving toward what matters most.

At this time of year, gratitudes don’t have to be grand. Sometimes noticing the smallest details that enhance our lives deepens our ability to observe and appreciate the world around us.

For instance, this year, I’m celebrating a masterpiece of nature: the intricate spider web my husband photographed inside our window. (Apologies to perfectionist housekeepers—shield your eyes!) Isn’t it a work of art? We couldn’t bear to take it down. Sadly, it will soon be gone the way of Thanksgiving cleanup before guests arrive.

Tiny gratitudes are everywhere if we take the time to look. The clerk who smiles at checkout. The customer service rep who genuinely helps. Our incredible UPS driver!

A big BABY gratitude

This year, I have a “big baby gratitude” that leaves me nearly speechless: a baby.

It might sound cliché to call a newborn one of life’s most magical, awe-inspiring miracles—but that doesn’t make it any less true.

My great-granddaughter, Charlotte, arrived on Saturday morning, welcomed by parents and family who already adore her.

I struggle to find words for the miracle of new life. How does a tiny being transition from the comfort of the womb to a brand-new, unfamiliar world in mere minutes? (Oh, to be so adaptable!)

Right now, Charlotte’s life is delightfully simple: she cries, nurses, sleeps, poops, and opens her tiny eyes to take in this strange, beautiful world. Pure magic.

For many of us, these past weeks have felt dark, with an uncertain road ahead. But Charlotte doesn’t care.

She is a little package of hope, a bundle of light, a being of love wrapped in a human body.

Even in the hardest times, life finds a way to break through—and for that, I am profoundly thankful. For life. For Charlotte. For countless small blessings. And for you, dear reader—I never take you for granted.

Wishing you a day filled with gratitude, wherever you are.
